The Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) is a non-refundable federal credit worth 15% of eligible medical expenses above a threshold - generally 3% of your net income or $2,759 (for 2026), whichever is less. Eligible expenses are extensive: prescription drugs, dental procedures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, medical devices, certain renovations for a disability, and many more. You can claim expenses for yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children born in the same or five preceding years. You can choose any 12-month period ending in the tax year that maximizes your claim. This calculator determines your eligible threshold, computes the credit on your qualifying expenses, and shows your federal tax reduction. Some provinces offer a matching provincial credit as well.
