Yes - even if you earned little or no income, filing a tax return can benefit you. It may make you eligible for benefits like the GST/HST credit. If you had earned income (from employment or self-employment), CRA also uses your return to calculate your RRSP contribution room - 18% of that earned income. If you paid tuition to an eligible post-secondary institution, you may be able to claim a federal tuition tax credit. Your school will give you a T2202 slip showing your eligible tuition amounts. If you are repaying a student loan from a government program, you may be able to claim the interest you paid as a credit. Only government-issued student loans qualify. Most scholarships, bursaries, and fellowships received by full-time students at qualifying institutions are not taxable. If you moved at least 40 km closer to a school or new work location, you may be able to claim moving expenses.
