Medical Expenses and Your Taxes

If you or your family paid for medical expenses that were not fully reimbursed by insurance, you may be able to claim a federal tax credit. This is a non-refundable credit. CRA maintains a detailed list of eligible medical expenses. Common examples include prescription drugs, dental work, vision care, and certain medical devices. You can only claim medical expenses above a threshold - generally 3% of your net income or a set dollar amount (whichever is lower). You can claim medical expenses for yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children. CRA requires you to keep receipts for all medical expenses you claim. While you do not need to submit them with your return, you may need them if CRA reviews your claim.
