The Home Buyers' Plan (HBP)

The Home Buyers' Plan (HBP) is a CRA program that allows first-time homebuyers to withdraw up to $35,000 from their RRSP to put toward buying or building a qualifying first home - without paying tax on the withdrawal at the time. You must be a first-time homebuyer, which CRA defines as someone who has not owned a home they lived in as their main residence in the current year or the four preceding years. The amount you withdraw must be repaid to your RRSP over 15 years. CRA sets a minimum repayment amount each year. If you also have a First Home Savings Account (FHSA), you may be able to use both for the same home purchase. Your RRSP funds must have been on deposit for at least 90 days before you can withdraw them under the HBP.
