The GST/HST Credit is a quarterly, tax-free payment from CRA to help individuals and families with low and modest incomes offset the goods and services tax (GST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) they pay. You may receive the GST/HST Credit if you are 19 or older, a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, and your income is below a certain threshold. The amount depends on your net income and family situation. Visit CRA for the current year's amounts. CRA pays the GST/HST Credit in four installments: January, April, July, and October. You automatically become eligible when you file your tax return and CRA assesses your income. This is another reason to always file - even with little or no income.
